Harnessing insight to drive success in an era of membership decline

Many organisations, across multiple sectors, are experiencing intense pressures in an era of membership decline. Careers are fragmenting, prestige is being renegotiated, AI is reshaping professions, and members are increasingly asking not 'what will I get?' but 'who will I become?'. The old promise of qualify, progress, belong for life no longer holds.  

In 2024/5, ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) partnered with Truth Consulting to deliver a transformational member insight programme to confront that reckoning head-on. 

With over 6,000 members contributing globally, the programme built a uniquely robust evidence base that shaped ICAEW's Direction 2030 strategy – influencing strategic priorities, organisational design, new leadership roles and international growth. 

Built on deep collaborative framing with leadership, directors and active members from the outset, the research carried a member-defined mandate for change. 

This session shares how it was done, why the design mattered and what any organisation wrestling with belonging, value and relevance can take from it.
